The diverse community of Hackensack, New Jersey has attained an enduring place in popular culture. Today a city of nearly 45,000 residents, the town has experienced a resurgence of growth during recent years.

Proximity to New York City

Hackensack sits in Bergen County, along the banks of the Hackensack River, just across the water from Teaneck. Many of its residents work in the nearby New York City area.

The location attracted Native American settlement. Later, Hackensack drew many waves of settlers from the Netherlands, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Korea, Eastern Europe and North Africa. Today this New Jersey community has become one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse places in the state. Hackensack has welcomed large numbers of immigrants over the course of recent decades.

Hackensack’s Appeal

New residents appreciate many aspects of Hackensack, including its close proximity to employment opportunities. The Greater New York City area also offers numerous cultural and recreational amenities. The town has grown slowly in size according to United States census reports since before the turn of the last century.

Some Famous Residents

Hackensack has boasted a number of famous residents in the past. During the American Revolutionary War, for instance, George Washington and the retreating Continental Army passed through this area in advance of pursuing English troops.

The late television and film character actor Phil Arnold (1909-1968) came from Hackensack. He eventually appeared in some 150 productions, including several movies featuring the Three Stooges.

Popular daytime series actor Phil Carey (1925-2009), a star on One Life to Live also claimed Hackensack as his town of birth, as does singer Debby Boone Ferrer. She entered the world in a hospital in Hackensack when her parents, the singers Pat and Shirley Boone, resided in nearby Leonia, New Jersey. Numerous other celebrities, including well known entertainers, athletes and politicians, have traced connections to this New Jersey community.

Hollywood Goes Hackensack

Some celebrated television shows and films also contain connections to Hackensack, New Jersey. These productions probably helped enhance the name recognition of Hackensack around the world.

Although the bulk of filming for the hit television mobster series The Sopranos occurred to the south of Hackensack on location in Elizabeth and Kearny, the film company did complete some shooting at sites in Hackensack.

The film Brewster’s Millions (1985) starring Richard Pryor and John Candy reportedly featured a fictitious baseball team called the “Hackensack Bulls.” They competed against the New York Yankees. In this century, an increasing number of production companies have selected New Jersey as a filming location, and Hackensack’s fame as a site for the film and TV industry has expanded.
